Victory Clinic started in July 2021 at Winslow Indian Health Care Center. The goal of this clinic is to
prevent type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases among the children and
teenagers. Primary care providers can refer their patients to Victory Clinic if they feel that their patient
can benefit from further guidance in wellness, nutrition and fitness education and activities.
Children and teenagers are developing type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure at an early age, which
sometimes include taking medications to treat diabetes and high blood pressure.
One risk factor for diabetes and high blood pressure among children and teenagers is obesity. Children
and teenagers' are measured for a body mass index (BMI) at their Well Child exams. The BMI is
calculated using their age, height and weight. Children who have a BMI greater than the 95th percentile
are diagnosed with obesity. Recent data shows that approximately 30% of children and teenagers in our
Winslow Service Area, are in the obesity range of BMI. Children and teenagers who develop these health
problems at an early age may develop further health problems when they are adults.
